Retired it after 2 1/2 yrs

Review Date: October 27, 2009
Reviewer: A. Matthews,
I used it mostly in the fall and winter time. It worked pretty well. The thing i like most was that it had a automatic cut off, if it ever gets knocked over. I have kids so that was a plus. It heats up pretty quick it doesnt work well in large rooms, but it works more so in bedrooms. I mean dont get me wrong itll heat an entire apartment (600sq ft.) but it wont be toasty just warm enough. I had to retire mine cause the power cord broke off at the very base of the machine. Maybe from being bent to much, not sure. But a good heater. My next one i want it to be more powerful.
I love this heater

I had one for years and it finally went to heater heaven. I immediately googled "Patton", hoping they still made these. Lo and behold, I found it on Amazon.com. I ordered it immediately and even paid the extra money to have it on my doorstep the next day. You can't go wrong with this heater - it is the mother of all heaters!!
Best portable heater I have ever owned

Review Date: January 28, 2010
Reviewer: Renault Evans, Orange, NJ
I purchased this heater on the recommendation of my wife, who was using it while waitinf for a new furnace to be installed. And my wife said it keep two large rooms warm. I ordered it for myself, and WOW. This heater is worth the money. Even my dog loves it. It has quartz heating, and a fan to blow out hot air. So it really heats a good size room very quickly. The heater starts heating right away, and the heat is going full blast in about 2 minutes. It works very efficiently, and I usually use it on the low setting. The heater is light weight and easy to move around. I will be purchasing another one, because it just works so well. At such an affordable price. This heater can be summed up in just one simple word "awesome".
Very nice heater

Dayton Heater

Review Date: December 30, 2009
Reviewer: Hmmmm,
I purchased this heater for a home office after using one for my actual office. Additionally, there were about 10 or so other people in the office building that utilized these heaters. I would say that the room sizes ranged from 12' x 12' to about 20' x 20'. As an oil-based heater, it takes a few minutes to warm up and also warm up the room. However, once it gets going, it really does a fantastic job. This particular heater, I believe, is also made under the brand "New Air." I ultimately chose this heater over other heaters because it is 1) very thin and takes up very little space, 2) it takes up only 400 watts (unlike most other heaters that take up 1,500 watts), 3) it works very well, 4) it's completely silent (great for speaking on the phone) and 4) I believe it's safer than coil-based heaters. Since this heater is used in a space that has a multitude of other equipment pulling a good amount of wattage, the low wattage was a primary consideration. In fact, the actual office building chose this heater to replace the other original 12 or so heaters because the other heaters were constantly tripping the circuit breakers due to over-utilization of electric power. While it would be nice to have a digital switch to set automatic shut-off and temperature, there is a manual dial where you can set the temperature in the room by turning the dial until you here a "click," which will cause the unit to keep the temperature at that level. All in all, I'm very pleased with this heater and would recommend it to others that are interested in safety, preventing circuit-breaker tripping and silent running.

Reviewer: VanDyke,
This product works excellent:) I had it for about 2 1/2 years and it still works as when I first bought it. Only 400 Watts and works great in my 16 X 13. Because my husband and I have a new born, when the building heat is off, I turn it on and we feel the temperature difference. My husband is an H.V.A.C Tech so he has it by the window to stop the cold air from creeping in. It's the quietest portable heater I ever bought. Makes absolutely no noise. That's a plus for us. Keeps us and the baby warm. I also bought one for my cousin's office space and she loves it. Highly recommend.
small and cozy

Review Date: January 11, 2010
Reviewer: Gilly, New York, NY
works great for a small space-which is what I purchased it for. if kept on low setting, doesn't get too hot, important for bare legs, and is even more silent than our delonghi heater(which is better for a larger room). remember to move the dial past the "click" for it to start heating. I would only add a simple programmable time clock for future units. may purchase a separate timer for the outlet for this one.
simple, clean, and very functional. our cat is happy too, sniffs it each time, not avoiding it like larger heaters.
Only makes warm my feet

Review Date: January 8, 2010
Reviewer: Bartosz Kowalski,
I bought the heater for my leaving room 12 x 12 and I am so disappointed. The heater is small, is producing enough heat to make my feet warm. It is good for office, put under your desk and fill warm.

If you want to heat your room, forget about this product, spend few more $$$ and buy something better otherwise you will have one more thing in your storage or garage.

Customer Reviews For Sunbeam SFH436-UM Bathroom Heater Fan with Digital Thermostat

Good heater

Review Date: October 20, 2009
Reviewer: YM, San Ramon, CA United States
Heats up a medium sized room well and makes it quite cozy when the rest of the house is cold. Like the bathroom safety features. Like the digital thermostat. Timer is very convenient. Easy to set clock. Doesn't have tip over protection, but haven't seen any other heater in this category that does. It stands pretty stable, so would be hard to tip this one over anyway. Overheat protection is nice. Not ultra quiet, but fine with me. Handle is nice. Quite light in weight. Cord is long enough. Good looking heater too!
Definitely does have one little annoyance, though. Every time the heater is unplugged, the clock setting is lost, and the next time the heater is plugged in, the 12:00 keeps flashing!!!
Does its job

Review Date: February 9, 2010
Reviewer: Lynne, East Brunswick, New Jersey United States
I've been using this Sunbeam bathroom heater for about a month now with no problems. This is the first bathroom heater I've ever owned, so I unfortunately don't have anything to compare it to.

With that said, I purchased this solely for use in my small bathroom since it gets quite chilly in there, and so far it's kept it nice and warm. :) I think the heater is a bit noisy, but on the other hand...at least I'm not cold!

As other reviewers have said, the clock resets every time the heater is unplugged, though I haven't had a need for it yet. I've tested out the functions, like the timer, stay on, fan, and the digital thermostat, all of which work great. Also, when you turn the power off while it's still running, it switches to fan mode and counts down from 10 seconds before turning off.

During the initial use, there IS a rather strong plastic smell but it seems to gradually dissipate with use, though I may just be getting used to it.
Warm and Cosy

The heater is one of the best I have used. Good directions and very well made.
Excellent heater

Review Date: July 13, 2009
Reviewer: G. Balmes, Washington
I purchased this heater for several reasons. I liked the fact it can be mounted on the wall and for the various functions and price. like setting the digital temperature control, which the heater will shut off at it's desired level and it's own built in Ground Fault interrupter switch.

I'm retired so I haven't used the the function of having the heater to come on at a desired time.

This model does put out the heat so it should be ample for an average size bathroom.

The reason I did not give it 5 stars as it does not have a turn off switch when tipped over; shame though it wasn't included; but over all I do recommend this model whole heartily

I purchased mine on the "Bay" for $20.00

Good heater with Timer for small room

I am using it for bathroom. Want the bathroom hot enough in cold winter mornings.
Timer feature starts the heater 15 minutes before I get up, so the room is warm when I enter.

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.

Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

Valuable addition to the shop

Review Date: March 20, 2007
Reviewer: Jay Vessels,
I heat my woodshop with a 55,000 BTU kerosene heater. The heater I have has a built-in thermostat, but it's junk. I had taken to turning the heater on high until the shop was warm, then turning it off until I noticed it was getting cold. Not good! Since Dad's got this thermostat on his kerosene heater, I knew it would be a good choice.

What I didn't realize until after I bought this thermostat is how good of an idea it is. Now the shop is a much more constant temperature, and it is much more pleasant to be out there.

The only downside to this thermostat is that it would be nice if it had a dedicated power switch, and perhaps a power light so you know when it's plugged in and turned on.
